About

The Applied Metrology Laboratory operates out of three laboratory spaces at the Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics, supporting activities across fundamental research, technology commercialisation, and precision metrology.

Research Laboratory

The research laboratory is the primary development space for Digital Interferometry — a code-division multiplexing and ranging technique that simplifies optical hardware while enabling precision measurement across a wide range of scales. Current experiments include the ChronoPhase absolute ranging and vibrometry system and code-division multiplexed fibre sensing architectures for distributed acoustic sensing, optical phase arrays, and distributed frequency control.

Commercialisation Laboratory

The commercialisation laboratory supports the translation of Digital Interferometry techniques into deployable technologies, with a current focus on fibre optic gyroscope systems for GPS-denied navigation. The laboratory is equipped with a precision rotation stage for gyroscope characterisation and calibration.

Frequency Comb Laboratory

The frequency comb laboratory houses the group's optical frequency metrology infrastructure, including a GPS-stabilised optical frequency comb for precision absolute frequency measurement and optical frequency transfer, a high resolution optical wavemeter, and laser stabilisation experiments using dual- and multi-wavelength interferometric approaches and fibre-based frequency references.
