National Science Week 2020
CGA is participating in National Science Week 2020! This year National Science week runs 15–23 August.
We took a Satellite Selfie on the lawns of our courtyard!
On Sat 15/08/2020, Prof. Susan Scott joins a group of female scientists in a series of online chats 'Adventures Abroad in Science – Canberra women discuss their experiences & research' to share her science adventure in 'Gravitational wave theoretical physicist'. Prof. Scott will be interviewed by the inimitable cast of Dramatis Scientificae – a science-theatre collaboration that combines humour, caricature and social satire with rigorous scientific methods. Register through this link.
On Fri and Sat 21 and 22/08/2020, SciVR will go ahead, fully remotely this year! SciVR is a virtual reality experience using a pair of goggles and a smartphone application that enables users to explore the universe and origins of explosions in space, tracking events as they happen. Professor Alan Duffy and Dr Rebecca Allen from Swinburne University of Technology will walk the users through the universe and answer questions through a live Q&A. They share research using Australian facilities, like the CSIRO Parkes telescope, to reveal more about the nature of these extreme and transiting objects. There are 2 livestream events:
- Friday 21 August from 8:00pm to 9:00pm for adults and teens;
- Saturday 22 August from 11:30am to 12:00pm for families with younger children.
Our colleagues at OzGrav have partnered with 58 SciVR hubs across the entire country to distribute the free VR goggles. CGA is the only distribution point in the ACT. Find your nearest pick up location here. If you are in the ACT, book your goggles though this link.
